Unbelievable Ayurvedic Spa Treatment
|
The most memorable spa experience I ever had was during my Indian holiday in Goa, a seaside region and former Portuguese colony which specializes in laidback living, spicy exotic seafood and plentiful wine-shops.

Feeling a bit drained by the bright sun and humid weather after a morning of shopping, my friend and I stepped into the tree-shaded precincts of a place advertising traditional “Ayurvedic” spa treatment. Ayurveda is an ancient oriental medicinal and healing art. The cool lobby area was lined with shelves of glass bottles filled with oily liquids of different hues of brown and yellow, some with medicinal plant roots floating in them, and a pleasantly musky smell hung in the air.
|
Posters advertised different treatments available, which included a very interesting one called “Shiro-dara” where a cup of oils was suspended over the head of the person – a small hole in the cup dripped the liquid, one drop at a time, right on your forehead and was said to be an excellent aid to mental relaxation and meditation if done regularly over a lengthy period of time. Curious to experience as much as I could, I opted for a different full body treatment lasting three hours which came at an amazingly affordable thirty dollars!

I stripped down and lay in a dimly lit private cubicle which was separated from the others by quaint sections of coconut-leaf matting. My lady masseur spent the next hour and a half thoroughly massaging me with a strong-smelling oil and I gradually felt all the inbuilt tension in my muscles release. Such a profound sense of relaxation came over me that I actually fell asleep at the end of the exercise and had to be woken up half an hour later!

Then I was wrapped in a towel and taken to their “sauna” area. Here stood what looked like large wooden barrels with holes cut out of one end. One of these “barrels” was opened by a hinge on the top which swung open to reveal an interior with a stool. I sat on the stool while the spa assistant closed the barrel around me so that only my head poked out through the hole at the top. Then some sort of steam valve was opened up over my whole body and I sat hot and sweating my toxins out through every single pore for the next ten minutes (though it felt like an eternity honestly!). After I came out, I was encouraged to drink several glasses of water to replace my lost fluids. Then a special Ayurvedic soap tablet made of herbs was given to me and the assistant directed me to a bathroom to wash off my oily residues. I had a thorough shower and came out feeling unbelievably refreshed. It was as if all my muscle aches and pains had never been and I felt absolutely limber and my complexion glowed. To this day whenever I feel very tired, believe me, just the thought of that entire experience evokes the entire feeling of rejuvenation all over again. I do hope I get the chance to experience it again!
